FAO Nick Brookman

Nick,

Thank you for consulting GMAAS on this application.

The development site is located within an area formerly occupied by a series of buildings forming the small hamlet of Boarshaw Fold, from at least the late 18th century. The hamlet has an entry on the Greater Manchester Historic Environment Record (HER 5049.1.0), which references a depiction of the hamlet on Yates’ map of 1786, where several buildings are shown around the junction of Stanycliffe Lane, Boarshaw Lane and Green Lane. The same buildings are shown on Ordnance Survey mapping from the mid to late-19th century but are no longer depicted on mapping as of some time between the 1920s and 1950s. There is potential for below-ground remains of the former buildings to be located within the proposed development area, but these are likely to already have been truncated (if not fully removed) by groundworks associated with creation of the current buildings on the site.

The development seeks to convert the existing building to allow further residential apartments to be created, including a first-floor extension over existing built-form. There will be negligible potential for knowledge to be gained of earlier buildings within the site, and the current building is of no architectural or historical merit to warrant any recording of the structure prior to alteration.

I am satisfied that the proposed development does not threaten the known or suspected archaeological heritage, and on this basis there is no reason to seek to impose any archaeological requirements upon the applicant.

Kind regards

Ben
